Kilkerran Heavily Peated (Batch #10)

Kilkerran Closely Peated from Glengyle distillery is a whisky that we’ve got often (test Batch #3 and Batch #4). The 2024 launch comes from 90% ex-bourbon casks and 10% ex-sherry casks.

Kilkerran Closely Peated (57,8%, OB 2024, ref. 24/32)

Nostril: the dominance of bourbon oak offers it a really clear profile. Robust peat with a beneficiant creamy observe, assume cream soda with shortbread and hints of vanilla cream. Then hints of banana cake, some coconut aromas. After some time additionally a honeyed, flippantly tropical trace that jogs my memory of fashionable Bowmore manufacturing. Some coastal components within the background.

Mouth: similar echoes of Bowmore for my part, albeit with a firmer peaty footprint. Hints of mango, lime and pink grapefruit, together with honey. Then it strikes to caramel earlier than the charred herbs make it drier and a tad harsher. Will get a little bit woody, with a charred and tannic edge.

End: lengthy loasting, with extra charred notes, fading peat smoke, black peppercorns and charred rosemary.

An excellent choice for those who’re into closely peated Campbeltown whisky. The good fruitiness of this launch is a optimistic shock, for my part (until you’re after the heaviest peat). Out there from The Whisky Trade for example, and but to reach in continental European outlets.
