Mortlach 2011 / Moine 2004 (DL Previous Specific)

A easy session right now. I got here throughout a Mortlach 2011 and Bunnahabhain 2004 bottled by Douglas Laing of their Previous Specific sequence. The Bunna is a peated model, ‘Moine’ spirit.

Mortlach 12 yo 2011 (48,4%, Douglas Laing ‘Previous Specific’ 2023, refill hogshead, 361 btl.)

Nostril: at first good and fruity, with stewed apples and foam bananas, in addition to some bread dough and hints of lower grass. Then gooseberries, a touch of coconut and golden raisins. Gentle vanilla. There’s a slight robustness to it, however apart from that it’s surprisingly contemporary and fruity.

Mouth: similar feeling of shiny, virtually tropical fruits. Apricots, yellow plums, lemons and kumquats. Maybe a bit mango even. Getting greener and zestier after some time, with added grapefruits. Then some flippantly baked pastry with custard, in addition to vanilla biscuits and honeyed nuts. Hints of candied ginger and white pepper as nicely.

End: medium size, however contemporary. Extra of this vanilla with inexperienced fruits mixture and a few zesty and grassy touches.

We are inclined to affiliate Mortlach with a heavier and extra meaty model, however that is surprisingly shiny and fruity. Why aren’t we seeing this profile extra usually? Offered out virtually all over the place, however I seen it on deinWhisky.de, or you will get a pattern from Whiskysite.nl

Bunnahabhain Moine 18 yo 2004 (48,4%, Douglas Laing ‘Previous Specific’ 2022, refill hogshead, 284 btl.)

Bunnahabhain Moine 2004 - Douglas Laing Old Particular

Nostril: very sooty and ashy, with tarry ropes and previous ships within the docks. Crushed peppercorns, rusty cash, whiffs of smoked meat. Then tobacco leaves, hickory smoke and dusty hay, in addition to some salty air. Over time diesel fumes and medicinal touches grow to be stronger.

Mouth: appears a bit youthful now, in some way. Straight peat, smoked barley, extra tobacco and black peppery notes. Hints of bacon seem, in addition to smoked pear and loads of chilly ashes. A light-weight gingery notice and scorched lemon zest, together with natural notes within the distance. Regardless of some sweetness, it leaves a pointy and coastal impression.

End: lengthy, candy and natural, stuffed with barbecue ashes, brackish peat, with a lightweight woody edge.

A really coastal dram, sturdy and wintery. Fairly an audacious dram with loads of character, however much less depth and steadiness than I anticipated. Offered out, so far as I can inform. Rating: 83/100
