The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has unveiled the thirtieth launch in its experimental Heresy vary, marking a departure from the collection’ typical blended choices with a particular Speyside single malt – Skooshy Stroopwafel.
The 11 12 months previous whisky demonstrates the society’s experience in secondary maturation, initially ageing in bourbon hogsheads earlier than ending in European oak sherry butts.
The Making Of Skooshy Stroopwafel
The spirit started its journey on April 8, 2013, in bourbon hogsheads at an unnamed Speyside distillery. After eight years, the whisky developed fruity traits with mild cereal notes and stone fruit sweetness.
Head of Whisky Creation Euan Campbell then transferred the liquid to 4 contemporary European oak sherry butts from the Juan Pino cooperage. These casks, seasoned for 13 months with Pedro Ximénez sherry in Spain’s sherry triangle, supplied a further 32 months of maturation. Following this, all 4 butts confirmed exceptional consistency and have been vatted into this single malt bottling.
Upon tasting by the Society’s Tasting Panel, the specialists discovered notes of lotus biscuits, muscovado sugar, whipped cream on stroopwafel, and pumpkin spice frappuccino. Whipped cream is named “skooshy cream” in Scotland, therefore the title of this decadent dram.
“This launch completely demonstrates our dedication to exploring the interaction between spirit and wooden to create a singular journey in flavour,” says Julien Willems, Whisky High quality Supervisor at SMWS. “Whereas our Heresy vary is thought for progressive blends, we sometimes discover single malts that embody the experimental spirit of the collection. The choice to make use of sherry butts quite than hogsheads allowed us to reinforce quite than overwhelm the distillery’s fruity character.”
